Earth, Sun & Moon

On the 22nd of November class 9 did some work on how the position of the earth, sun and moon can help us measure the passing of time. We figured out that it takes 24 hours for the earth to spin all of the way around on its axis. We also found out that it takes 1 year for the earth to orbit the sun. As well, we found out that it takes 1 month for the moon to orbit the earth. By L.E and L.F

In IPC this week we have been learning about the sun, moon and earth. We have been trying to know how the moon gets its shape. When the sun gives sunlight to the moon that part of the moon lights up and then it shows a shape. When the moon gets light from the sun it reflects of the sun to the earth.

This week in IPC we were learning about the phases of the moon. We were learning the way the earth blocks parts of the moon to create the shape and the way the sun shines the rest. We found out the moon moves around the earth making the earth able to block parts on the moon creating the four shapes. The shapes are: the crescent, half moon, lemon moon and the full moon.

On the 23rd November all of year 5 had a science day. We carried out an investigation where we had to find out how the sun affects a shadow. We measured a shadow of a pencil using a pencil a piece of paper a cotton wheel and a metre ruler. We went out every few hours to see if the shadow got bigger or smaller, it mainly got smaller each hour. By C.R. and B.P.

Shopkeeper Goes Bye-Bye!

This week in literacy we have been writing about the shopkeeper’s arrest in the film Alma. The film Alma is about a little girl called Alma that spotted a doll in the shop window that looked exactly like her. When Alma touched the doll that looked exactly like her, she turned into it. Our task was to write a newspaper report about it.

Mission to Mars

In y59 we have been learning about the distances of the planets to the sun.
This diagram shows the distance from the sun to scale.

The real distances are:
Mercury: 57,909,100km
Venus: 108,208,600km
Earth: 149,598,000km
Mars: 227,939,200
Jupiter: 778,298,400
Saturn: 1,429,400,000
Uranus: 2,870990,000
Neptune: 4,504.,000,000
Pluto: 5,913,520,000

Class nine did a display board with the solar system and we painted the nine planets and we put blobs of white paint to make stars and when the planets dried we put them on the display board. The planets are all drawn to scale. by LC and CD

Look how tiny Pluto is!

Human Pictogram

In maths we made a human pictogram and we only had 2 sheets of paper, sellotape, ourselves and scissors. It is called a human pictogram because we had to stick the raindrops on ourselves .Luckily Miss Turner let us look what last year’s class did. One raindrop was worth 2cm of rainfall and half a raindrop was worth 1cm of rainfall. The purpose of doing this is because we were learning about graphs and learning how to set them out.

Alma - Animated Film

In literacy we have been doing lots of work based around the award winning animated film 'Alma' by Rodrigo Blaas. This is what we've been up to:

Alma was a bit scary because there’re dolls that move their eyes side to side. What happens is that you wright on the chalkboard and a shop makes a doll that looks like you, and then you really want it but when you touch it you turn into a doll. The film was a very short film but it was still good.

We were watching a film called alma it was where there was a ghost was turning people into dolls after we watched the film we made a wanted poster for the police to catch the ghost. Then we wrote 5 sentences about the ghost and we drawn a picture to show the police who it is and mostly what the ghost looked like. After that we coloured it in that was fun we named all of our ghost character I named mine Joshua. By jj

In literacy we made a wanted poster about a person that traps children from a short movie called Alma. On our wanted poster we had to use 5 sentences to describe the person like what they looked like or how they dressed and underneath the description we wrote what to do if you see them. In the movie a girl called Alma gets trapped in a dolls body when she wrote on a blackboard and touched a dolls nose in a deserted doll shop. While we were watching Alma we were looking carefully at each picture and made hand shapes to say if it was a low, high, medium, close or wide angle. By s.l

This week in we made we made wanted posters from Alma.
In the movie Alma the girl gets stuck in a dolls body when she was walked to a deserted little village one day. We made wanted posters about the evil shopkeeper who kept all those dolls. We made description about the shopkeeper .We also had to draw a picture what your shopkeeper looked like. BY J.F

Wanted poster by AB

This week, we made wanted posters for the evil shopkeeper in Alma. First, we did a practice. We had to do a description for the shopkeeper. It could only be five sentences. We did that in one section and we had to put a reward of money and a telephone number if they had found them. In the top section we put a question like, HAVE YOU SEEN THIS MAN? We then typed it up on the computers. We printed them out and put an illustration in the middle box. It was a whole piece of work complete.

Surviving in the Wild

On Tuesday the 1st of November 2011 Y5 went to Plantsbrook Nature Reserve. Our topic is a mission to mars and we are finding out what people need to survive. We looked out for plants, animals, polution and dangers. The plants and animals we saw were Holly bush,Ivy and reeds the animals we saw where ducks, birds a squirrel and seagulls. The polution we saw was a tin can in the water and some litter. DS & RP

We were thinking about setting up a camp for the month and what sort of things we would need to survive like food and water. For food, we could have birds, ducks, black berries and fish. For dink we could drink the water from the the lake by boiling the water first to get the germs out, then drinking it. TA & JJ

We saw some dangers like fungus, plastic bottles and wrappers. Te was also some animal habbitats like a beavers. We thought we could build a shelter out of long grass, stick and logs.LJB & CMW
