Maths

This week in maths we have been rounding up and down to the nearest ten, unit or tenth. We have been doing multiplying and dividing by 10,100&1000. We were also using our calculator skills. Today we tried to use one number and +,=,and x sign. We have been working on our fractions some of us struggled but we all got it in the end.

Legends

On Friday 10th February we wrote our legends. We chose a place in Great Britain and we chose some weird names for our setting and our people in our legend for example: Lampeter is a place but it can also be used as a name. At the end of writing we marked our partners legends and they were fantastic. Some of them were better than others and some were not better than others but they were all brilliant.

For the past few weeks we have been learning about legends. We watched Robin Hood and I really liked it! We were also writing out our own settings for our legends. And we have also painted pictures for our legends. We have read loads of different legends some of them are:
Robin Hood, King Arthur, the Afanc, Llys Helig.

In English we have been learning about legends. We found our place on Google maps e.g. Leddington. We have also Painted our settings. We watched Robin hood and read about King Arthur.

Using Clay

This week in Art we have been looking at busts made out of clay. (This is a Head and shoulders out of clay.) In the Roman times all the emperors had very detailed busts. We tried to make a bust like in the Roman times but we found out that it is very hard.
Here are some tips:
1. Break the clay into two parts to make a nose as well.
2. Create the shoulders then create the head.
3. Then finally attach them together and wait till they dry.

This week in art we have been making clay busts of ourselves. We have been looking at all of the features of busts and we have had a look at some Roman busts and some contemporary busts. When we made our busts, we had to look very carefully at the features of our faces and the shape of our faces. Now we have made them, we have to wait for them to dry over the holidays and then we are going to paint them.

This week in art we made clay busts of ourselves, they had to be very detailed and we also had to put water on them to make them stick together. We used a glue spreader to spread the water over the clay model and we also used it to put little details on to the clay models. We had to do it on newspaper so that we wouldn’t get any clay on the table but eventually we did. We had a contest with another class to see who could keep the most clay off the floor but we still don’t know who won yet.

We first played with the clay so we can know how to use it better. Then I put it in to three pieces. One for the head, one for the shoulders and one for my rugby ball. It was hard because it was sticky.

This week in art we have been making clay busts. We thought carefully about the different features we have, such as hair and eyes. We tried to get our shoulders as smooth as possible. Some people struggled with making their hair. After they are dried we get to paint them. After we paint them we get to play with them and take them home and show are moms and dads and our sisters and brothers.

The Gurdwara

On Wednesday 11th 2012 Year 5 went to a Gurdwara temple (a place of worship). It is where Sikh people pray to God while someone speaks their language. There is also a kitchen where some people make a massive meal that is vegetarian. When you go into the Prayer hall you have to take your shoes off so you don’t get the floor dirty. By R.P.

The Ikon Gallery

This week we have been to the Ikon gallery to see some art. We went inside and we were shown around the 2nd floor. There were lots of photographs in the room. The photographs were of objects and people dressed in old fashioned clothes (they were in black and white). In photos you are meant to smile bur we saw a picture that had a girl frowning as if she was serious. After lunch we went to the 1st floor and we saw films. We also saw other pictures of patterns and places.

Solids, Liquids & Gasses

This term in science we have been learning about solids, liquids and gases. We know that that the gases around us are gases like oxygen which makes up 21 % of the air we breathe. Anaesthetic gas normally is used in hospitals to numb patients or make them fall asleep. Hydrogen is the smallest element of the air. Natural gas is normally used for all day uses like cooking and can be set on fire easily. Helium is lighter than air and used to hold air ships and balloons in the air. Carbon dioxide is toxic to humans and animals and used to help plants make food. There is also argon gas, methane gas and nitrogen.

We put water into 4 pots. One of them had marbles in it, another one of them had sand, another one had soil and the other had cloth inside. We did this to find out which solid had the most air between the particles. In the end we found out the marbles held the most air between them by watching how many air bubbles came to the surface. We really enjoyed this task!!!

We did an investigation to find out how much air there is in different soils. We got 3 pots that had 3 types of soils in them. Soil number 1 was gardening soil, soil number 2 was the sandy soil and soil number 3 was a stony soil. In our investigation we put water in the 3 pots and in soil 1 we poured in 67ml of water in the pot and there was 33ml of air in there. In soil 2 there was 55ml of water poured in the pot and 45 ml of air. In soil 3 there was 71ml of water poured into pot and 29ml of air in it. After all that we discovered that soil 2 had the most air in it.

In science we did an experiment with soil and water. We had a measuring jug full to 100ml with water and we had 3 types of soil and we tipped water in the soil until the water reached 100ml. Every table did it and we all had different results so we had to do it as a class. The results from the class results were soil 1 had 62ml water poured and 38ml air in the soil. In soil 2 it had 43ml water poured and 47ml air in the soil. In soil 3 it had 49ml water poured and 41ml air in the soil.

We also carried out the following investigation to find out if air has weight.

Earth, Sun & Moon

On the 22nd of November class 9 did some work on how the position of the earth, sun and moon can help us measure the passing of time. We figured out that it takes 24 hours for the earth to spin all of the way around on its axis. We also found out that it takes 1 year for the earth to orbit the sun. As well, we found out that it takes 1 month for the moon to orbit the earth. By L.E and L.F

In IPC this week we have been learning about the sun, moon and earth. We have been trying to know how the moon gets its shape. When the sun gives sunlight to the moon that part of the moon lights up and then it shows a shape. When the moon gets light from the sun it reflects of the sun to the earth.
By PH

This week in IPC we were learning about the phases of the moon. We were learning the way the earth blocks parts of the moon to create the shape and the way the sun shines the rest. We found out the moon moves around the earth making the earth able to block parts on the moon creating the four shapes. The shapes are: the crescent, half moon, lemon moon and the full moon.

On the 23rd November all of year 5 had a science day. We carried out an investigation where we had to find out how the sun affects a shadow. We measured a shadow of a pencil using a pencil a piece of paper a cotton wheel and a metre ruler. We went out every few hours to see if the shadow got bigger or smaller, it mainly got smaller each hour. By C.R. and B.P.
